Lately, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is a hot topic in the tech industry. Perhaps more than our daily lives Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting the business world more. AI is everywhere, from gaming stations to maintaining complex information at work. Computer Engineers and Scientists are working hard to impart intelligent behavior in the machines making them think and respond to real-time situations. AI is transiting from just a research topic to the early stages of enterprise adoption. Tech giants like Google and Facebook have placed huge bets on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and are already using it in their products. But this is just the beginning, over the next few years, we may see AI steadily glide into one product after another.

Firstly, I'm discussing the real definition of AI and ML.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

According to Stanford Researcher, John McCarthy, “Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. Artificial Intelligence is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.”

Simply put, AI’s goal is to make computers/computer programs smart enough to imitate the human mind behaviour. Or, we can say Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of Artificial Intelligence. ML is a science of designing and applying algorithms that are able to learn things from past cases. If some behaviour exists in past, then you may predict if or it can happen again. This means, if there are no past cases then there is no prediction.

ML can be applied to solve tough issues like object detection, enable self-driving cars and face detection and recognition. ML uses complex algorithms that constantly iterate over large data sets, analyzing the patterns in data and facilitating machines to respond to different situations for which they have not been explicitly programmed. The machines learn from the history to produce reliable results. The ML algorithms use Computer Science and Statistics to predict rational outputs.

Machine Learning has proved to be a game-changer for many industries. ML techniques have plunged into almost all major industry verticals. No wonder, Machine Learning with its incredible potential has completely revolutionized the business space.

Following is the list of some companies that have the power and resources to shape our connected future and are investing heavily in AI.

Apple

Apple has been busy acquiring AI start-ups in recent years and sees Artificial Intelligence as a critical part of its future. In December 2018, the company officially appointed John Giannandrea as head of the AI and Machine Learning department. He will oversee the development of products such as Siri and the company’s new Create ML tool, which macOS and iOS developers can use to create efficient and straightforward training courses for their apps. As, there’s Siri, which is perhaps the one thing any iPhone user would immediately perceive as artificial intelligence. Machine learning drives several aspects of Siri, from speech recognition to attempts by Siri to offer useful answers.

Facebook

Artificial intelligence will be enormously powerful in the future. So it’s no surprise that Facebook is investing in AI. Facebook’s AI research group, known as FAIR, says it is committed to advancing the field of machine intelligence and developing new technologies to provide people with better ways to communicate. As Facebook uses different tasks using AI and ML, here a list of some.

Facial recognition. Facebook uses a DL application called DeepFace to teach it to recognize people in photos.

Textual Analysis. Facebook uses a tool it developed itself called DeepText to extract meaning from words we post by learning to analyze them contextually.

Facebook is a strong supporter of Open Source and makes most of the work of its AI labs Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) freely available for anyone to use or modify however they like.

Google

Perhaps the largest and most important AI company on this list is also the most obvious. Google has acquired AI start-ups as if there were going to be no more soon. Over the past four years, Mountain View has created no fewer than twelve new artificial intelligence companies. The most important purchase was the $400 million deal for DeepMind, the board game playing Go champion.
There is also Google’s machine system TensorFlow, which is now free for all, and the ongoing Tensor AI chip project for machine learning on the device. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has already mentioned that in the long run we are “evolving from a ‘mobile first’ to an ‘AI-first’ world in the computer industry,” and that already says everything you need to know to see where Google sees the future.

Microsoft

Like Amazon, Microsoft is involved in Artificial Intelligence on both the consumer and business sides. Cortana, Microsoft’s AI digital assistant, is in direct competition with Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Artificial Intelligence features are a large part of the company’s Azure Cloud service, which provides chatbots and machine learning services to some of the biggest names in the business. Microsoft also purchased five AI companies in 2018 alone.

Qualcomm

Qualcomm is another chip manufacturer that is committed to artificial intelligence. AI plays a crucial role in the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. The chip uses a signal processor for AI speech, audio and image functions. Qualcomm Snapdragons power some of the most popular smartphones on the market. If you’re interested in AI in the smartphone, you should keep an eye on Qualcomm.

As in the current era of technology, every organization uses AI and ML for enhancing their products or projects that able to give throat-cut competition to others.

Not only tech companies, but AI also used in Health Department, as AI algorithms will enable doctors and hospitals to better analyze data and customize their health care to the genes, environment and lifestyle of each patient. From diagnosing brain tumours to deciding which cancer treatment will work best for an individual, AI will drive the personalized medicine revolution.
